ACI Concrete Field Grade 1 Testing Technician Certification

This program consists of a virtual 3-hour review session starting at 8:00 AM on Thursday 01/09/2025 then an in-person exam starting at 7:30 AM on Saturday 01/18/2025 consisting of the 1-hour written exam and 2 hours for the performance (hands-on) exam. The package price includes the review, the exams, and all certification fees.

Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform and record the results of seven basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete.

Scope and Knowledge

The program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM test methods and practices.

  •      C1064/C1064M - Temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
  •      C172 - Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete
  •      C143/C143M - Slump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
  •      C138/C138M - Density (Unit Weight), Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
  •      C231 - Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method
  •      C173/C173M - Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method
  •      C31/C31M - Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field

Please review the following guidelines for the day of the exam:

  • If you are sick, showing signs of COVID-19, Flu or any other contagious illness or have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, we would ask you to not attend the exam and you will be given the option to reschedule so long as 24hr advance notice is provided. 
  • NO REFUNDS or CREDITS will be given for Exam Day no-shows. There are NO EXCEPTIONS. (If you do not alert us at least 5 days in advance of the Study Session and / or Exams with a valid excuse, you will be charged for the Exam.)
  • Non-contact temperature checks may be performed by the NCCACI Staff at Check-In. If temperature is at or above 100.4°F, the person will be asked to leave and no refund will be provided.
  • Each registrant will sit at their own table during the written exam.
  • Equipment will be sprayed down with soapy water as needed by staff.
  • Please be mindful of Social Distancing during the review and exam.
  • NCCACI reserves the right to change, cancel, or reschedule Study Sessions, Training, Exams, and Exam Sites at any time. NCCACI will contact you if any changes occur.
  • Legal photo ID is required for all Exams, also bring your own #2 pencil and calculator and do not share them.
  • Applicants must have proper PPE including a hard hat, safety glasses, vest, protective gloves (you will be handling concrete), and work boots. There could be down time while waiting for your Performance Exam. If you need to bring water or a snack, please feel free to do so. Always practice social distancing.

The one-hour WRITTEN EXAMINATION is closed-book and consists of 55 multiple-choice questions. There are between five and ten questions on each of the ASTM test methods and practices. To pass the written examination, BOTH of the following conditions must be met:

At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and practices; AND-A minimum score of 70% overall. 

The PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION is also "closed book" and requires actual demonstration of six of the required test methods and practices plus a verbal description of Practice C172/C172M (sampling). The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform (or describe, where allowed) all the required steps for each procedure. Certification is valid for a period of five years from the date of successfully completing all requirements. Recertification requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

ACI Certification programs are ADA compliant.

Individuals with disabilities requiring special accommodations must contact the ACI Certification Department for further information on how to proceed.
